WORSHIP

St Mary’s Church Sunday Music Group

The Sunday Music Group is an enthusiastic group of approximately 20 singers and instrumentalists who gather on Sunday mornings to lead the music at the 10.30am service. The members of the group have varying levels of musical skills and training, but all share the desire to serve God through their musical talents, and we learn much from one another. Our Musical Director and organist is Peter Dart.  He is supported by our pianist, Ian French and our guitarist Rosie Creedon who also deals with much of the administration.

We aim to be flexible, recognising that, for some, committing to every week is difficult, and many of the group serve in other ways as well such as helping with our young people, so most of our rehearsals are on the morning before the service (9.30am), and the line-up from week to week varies, depending on who is available. As a church we are trying to make our worship accessible and enriching to people of many tastes, so our repertoire reflects this and includes traditional hymns, occasional anthems, Taize chants and modern worship songs. For special occasions we take on additional challenges, and a few additional rehearsals, usually on Fridays, in order to produce music for services such as the carol service. We are fortunate to be supported on some of these occasions by some professional musicians. Some of the group have also been known to let down their hair and strut their stuff on the stage of the Woodclyffe Hall as a warm-up act for the main band in the Village Festival Blues or Folk nights!

At the moment, our instrumental line-up is not as varied as it once was.  Some of our musical teenagers grew up and went off to university and then moved away, and our talented clarinettist, Alan, sometimes feels a bit lonely without some other wind players to keep him company! We would like to encourage more instrumentalists to join us, although due to our limited rehearsal time, we need players to be approximately grade 5 standard or above. We have a set of drums, currently unused, and whilst we have no intention of adding drums to all our musical offerings, they would definitely enhance some of the modern songs we do, so do let us know of any competent drummers you know of who would be willing to play sometimes. We are always keen to have more singers. You don’t need to be able to read music, just the ability to sing in tune.  Please consider joining us!

THE ANNUAL CONCERT 2016

image

Music @ St Mary’s Annual Concert

The next Annual Concert will be on Saturday 18th November 2017 7.30pm

The Annual Concert is almost always a sell-out. It’s like Wargrave’s Got Musical Talent.

All the music, whether classical or contemporary, is ‘popular’ and the aim is to have a really enjoyable evening. A lot of younger people perform and it is really important to support them.  All the proceeds will go to the 21C Appeal.

A wide range of items were  performed by local musicians at the 2016 concert, including:

  • Paul Speed on the Trumpet
  • Charlie Dart on the Piano
  • Liz Drew on the Clarinet
  • Samuel Lloyd on the Trombone
  • Hugo Wade on the French Horn
  • Alan Baird on the Clarinet
  • The Gazebo Saxophone Quartet
  • Finn Wyatt on the Violin
  • Ben Giddens on the Organ
  • The Robert Piggott Junior School Choir
  • and Apollo5   our regular visiting group of five unaccompanied singers.
  • To say nothing of YOURSELVES joining in at appropriate places!

VILLAGE FESTIVAL 2017

ADVANCE SAVE THE DATE : Monday June 12 2017   image

As many of you will know our Musical Director serves on many music boards, including the Council of the Royal College of Music, the VCM foundation (which is behind Voces8 and Apollo5) and also The Academy of St Martin in the Fields.  We are incredibly fortunate that Peter has persuaded the Academy to come to the Wargrave Village Festival this year on Monday June 12. They are, quite simply, the best classical orchestra in the UK, and one of the best in the world. It will be the first time ever they have come to Wargrave. Save the date!

CONCERTS FROM OUTSIDE

We are always interested in providing a venue for concerts from local schools or other music groups in the area.  Please be in touch if you wish to consider this option.

Susie Buckle
