Church Schools within the Parish

Within the Parish of Wargrave with Knowl Hill, we are blessed in having our children’s local Infant, Junior and Secondary education delivered by 5 Church Schools, all providing an excellent level of education as positively measured by recent Ofsted and SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools) reports. The Mission Statement of the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education for our Church Schools is as follows:

“The Diocesan Board is committed to the education of the whole person to the fullest potential, to the development of moral and spiritual understanding, to the uniqueness of the individual and to the education of all within the maintained system.”

This relationship is formalised by the appointment by the Diocese of Foundation Governors nominated by the Parochial Church Council(s). (The Piggott School is now an Academy, and the rules for appointing Foundation Governors are slightly different). But it takes practical effect in the opportunities provided to the Parish Clergy to play an active rôle in the life of the schools, in class, in assembly, and in out of school activities. The schools regard the Parish Churches as their places of worship for special occasions like Christmas or Leavers' Services.

Information about the schools can be found on their respective websites:

Wokingham Borough Council has identified 6 areas of housing development in the Borough, which have outstripped the primary education places available. The pressure on the primary schools in Twyford and Wargrave has identified the need for a new school in Charvil and Wokingham LA decided to invite an 'expression of interest' from local schools to act as a sponsor. The Piggott (Senior) School's application was accepted and a new C of E Academy primary school came into operation at East Park Farm in Charvil in September 2013. The total responsibility for the new school will initially be the responsibility of The Piggott School Governors, which, in addition to Rev John Cook also includes Foundation Governors from the Parish.

Ranelagh School is also of relevance, since it is also a Church of England Academy and places can be applied for within the terms of the School's Trust Deed and within its Admissions Policy. The Revd John Cook and Sue Griffiths are Governors of the school.

The Foundation Governors for our local Church Schools

Foundation Governors, in common with all members of the Governing Body are there to ensure that the school provides the best possible education for every pupil/student, with the main roles of the Governing Body usually seen as:-

  • Providing a strategic overview
  • Acting as a critical friend
  • Ensuring accountability

There are, however, many other roles that a Governor gets involved with.

Foundation Governors, who are appointed by either the Parochial Church Council (PCC), the Diocesan Board of Education, the Deanery, a foundation body, such as the trustees or original founders of the school, or as an ex officio governor by virtue of office, also have the role of:-

  • Ensuring that the character of the school is maintained
  • Being responsible for Collective Worship reflecting the Anglican tradition
  • Being responsible for the RE in Voluntary Aided Church Schools, although, in Voluntary Controlled Church Schools, this is the responsibility of the Local Education Authority.
